Safer Space

A safer space refers to a collective effort to establish practices that create a freer and safer environment for everyone participating in the event to be present and engage.

The space is shaped by its users, and we are all responsible for implementing these practices.

Event organizers are responsible for addressing problematic situations in a way that respects all parties and is constructive.

We ask that you contact the event organizer on-site or afterward in a way that works for you.

We care and show consideration

We care about the other people participating in the event.

We care about how they are doing, how they feel, and how our actions and words affect them.

We also care for the shared space and its contents.

We respect others

We respect the diversity of the people participating in the event. We respect their different views, experiences, and backgrounds. We also respect other people’s choices, identities, personal space, and physical and emotional boundaries.

We do not disturb one another through touch, words, or actions. We meet others as they are and as they wish to be seen.

No racist, sexist, offensive, violent, or threatening behavior, nor discrimination or bullying in any form, is permitted at our events.

If we make a mistake, we apologize immediately and try to do things differently in the future.

We understand and we don’t assume

We understand that we don’t know everything about anyone.

We recognize our position of power.

We don’t make assumptions about each other. We don’t know each other’s traits, boundaries, or past. “No” means “no,” and we’ll stop if the other person asks us to.

We do not force anyone to do anything.

We remember that what is fun for us may be distressing or unpleasant for someone else.

We pay attention, communicate, and contribute positively

We greet one another.

We are friendly, polite, and open.

We explain what we are doing and help if someone asks for our assistance. We allow others to ask for help.

If we don’t understand something, we ask.

We listen and discuss respectfully.

We help create a helpful and friendly atmosphere, and through our actions, we strengthen an atmosphere of trust.

We report problems and ambiguities to the event organizer when necessary.

We follow common guidelines and take responsibility

We behave appropriately and follow common rules.

We do not hesitate to intervene in inappropriate behavior and report it to the event organizers if necessary. We are not indifferent and take responsibility.
